Windsor is very special to Queen Elizabeth II, and where successive kings and queens from William the Conqueror have remodelled Windsor Castle, first as a fortress set in a vast hunting forest, later as a grand palace with gardens and a Great Park where the Queen rides. Edward III established the highest order of chivalry here, the Order of the Garter, in the fourteenth century, and Edward IV built St George’s Chapel a century or so later for the Garter knights. Windsor oozes tradition, and the Garter Ceremony is still held here every year. We go on to visit either the giant standing stone circle at Stonehenge, the iconic centrepiece of an extensive prehistoric ceremonial landscape, or to see stunning Salisbury cathedral, of almost uniformly early English gothic architecture, with the famous tall spire that dominates the vast open space of the walled cathedral close and the countryside around.
