Bath from £495
The picturesque limestone Cotswold hills running northeast from Bath were at the heart of England’s wealth-creating medieval woollen industry, home to the prized white-faced ‘Cotswold Lion’ sheep reared for its superior fleece. The industry left a legacy of beautiful honey-coloured stone-built villages like Bibury with its picture postcard weavers’ cottages at Arlington Row, and the Slaughters, and market towns like Tetbury where the annual woolsack race is still held, Stow-in-the-Wold or Broadway. There are many beautiful ‘woolgothic’ churches like St Mary’s, Fairford, with a rare set of intact medieval stained glass windows. Some of the Cotswolds’ many manors and country houses are today homes to royalty, aristocrats, the rich and famous. Chavenage House and Rodmarton Manor are open to the public on limited dates. The Cotswolds are the perfect place to relax and enjoy the delights of medieval England from the safety of the 21st century.
