The Stonehenge and Avebury World Heritage Site designation recognizes the international importance of these Wiltshire sites. The iconic giant standing stone circle at Stonehenge is the centrepiece of an extensive prehistoric ceremonial landscape including a processional avenue, a sacred river, a feasting site, and groups of burial mounds, not to mention even earlier Neolithic features in the landscape. You will hear how exciting new discoveries in recent years have led to revised theories about the way these monuments were used. Avebury’s large stone circle within a massive ditch and bank also lies at the heart of a landscape rich in prehistoric remains. We can enter a stone-chambered Neolithic burial mound, and see the largest prehistoric man-made hill in Europe, before driving up a processional avenue lined with standing stones to the heart of Avebury. There may even be time to see archaeological finds at the Wiltshire Heritage Museum in Devizes.
