Salisbury and Bath
London from £650
Salisbury was founded as a medieval new town where five rivers meet, and planned on a grid pattern of blocks or ‘chequers’ to replace Old Sarum, the nearby fortified hilltop Norman city, on its restricted site. Salisbury’s stunning almost uniformly early English gothic cathedral with its famous tall spire dominates the vast open space of the walled cathedral close and the surrounding countryside. A rare copy of Magna Carta is on display inside. Bath is most famous for its Roman Baths and legacy of honey-coloured ‘Bath stone’ Palladian crescents, squares and streets of the Georgian era, like the Royal Crescent and Circus. Its hot mineral waters, unique in Britain, are a continuing theme in Bath’s development since its foundation by the legendary Prince Bladud, now supplying the modern spa. It also has great shops, restaurants and tea rooms like the famous Sally Lunn’s.
