Bath and Lacock
London from £620
The hot mineral waters that rise in Bath, unique in Britain, provide a continuing theme in the city’s development from prehistoric times to the present. We can visit the museum housing the Roman baths and temple precinct built beside the sacred spring, then take a tour of the elegant honey-coloured ‘Bath stone’ 18th century Georgian crescents and squares brought to life in Jane Austen’s novels, and hear the story of fashionable 18th century Bath’s heyday. You might want to squeeze in a visit to the Jane Austen Centre or just enjoy a bit of shopping and soaking up the beauty and atmosphere of this lively city. The nearby village of Lacock has been a film location for Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, Cranford, and many other costume dramas, while Lacock Abbey, founded in the 13th century, has been a Harry Potter location. The work of one former resident of the Abbey, one of the pioneers of photography, is celebrated in the Henry Fox Talbot photographic museum.
