Berkeley Castle and Gloucester

Bath from £400

Berkeley Castle, a Norman fortress relatively little modified over the centuries and where the Berkeley family still live, is where, famously, King Edward II was imprisoned and gruesomely murdered.  We visit his burial place, Gloucester cathedral, with its imposing Norman nave, and see beautiful early examples of fan-vaulting in the cloisters, used as a location in a Harry Potter film.  After a short city centre tour we go to nearby Gloucester Docks, the city's atmospheric early nineteenth century inland port which is like walking onto a giant period film set with an impressive assembly of large brick-built wharves and warehouses, one now housing the Waterways Museum on the history of England's river navigations, canals, and canal life.  The Gloucester Antiques Centre occupies another, while Gloucester Quays is an excellent place to shop for bargains or to relax.

Atlantic and continental weather systems meet over England so the weather can be unpredictable.  You really can experience all four seasons in one day!  We advise you to bring wet weather clothing, and cold weather clothing for the months of October to March.  We keep a set of umbrellas in our vehicle.  Please check the forecast on the Met Office link below shortly before your tour.
